What I have Learned from Banner this Semester (Final)
What I have learned in class this semester…at first, being that this was my second semester working on the Banner, I did not feel that I had learned as much as I did the first semester because there was so much to learn at first with the inverted pyramid, AP style guide and CBU style guide. (I will always be learning new things about the AP style guide…there are so many things which I would have never thought to be style issues until looking through that book – it never ceases to amaze me!) However, once I looked beyond the very basics of journalistic writing, I began to see how I have grown and changed this semester. I loved having my column this semester, but I will admit that it threw me for a little bit of a loop at first being able to put opinion into newspaper writing (I’d mostly done hard news before that) – I was afraid that if I started putting too much opinion that no one would be interested in reading my thoughts on things. The Harrower book helped me to get more comfortable with opinion and gave good tips on how to keep opinion appropriate for column writing. Looking at other people’s columns was also very helpful. Should I be allowed to do my column again next semester, I think I will have a much better feel for how to write like a columnist.
